Superintendent Message to Parents and Community Members
Wednesday, February 05, 2014

Dear Parents and Community Members,
We have been meeting yesterday and today with a state mediator to try to reach agreement with the teacher's union and avert a teacher's strike Thursday. The District has made several offers and exchanged proposals, but at this hour we still have several key areas that are not resolved.
To provide certainty for parents in arranging child care, I want to let you know that the District is closing all schools Thursday, Feb. 6. Depending on whether and when the contract is settled, the school closure may continue through next Monday.
We expect to continue negotiations throughout the day today and possibly into the morning hours Thursday. As soon as we have updates we will make them available on our website and through social media and news outlets.
We know this is a difficult time for our students, their parents, our staff, our School Board and the community at large. We appreciate all the expressions of support we have received as we try to reach agreements that will best serve the long-term interests of our students.
If a strike does occur, the one thing we can say with certainty is that at some point it will also end. Let's keep our focus on the things we can do to increase trust and strengthen relationships so we keep moving forward to reach our goals of improving graduation rates and student achievement.
Phil Long, Superintendent
