About the Superintendent

  • Bret Champion was the Superintendent of Schools for Klein ISD, providing PK-12 education for over 53,000 students.  After 23 years in Leander ISD as superintendent, teacher, principal, and assistant superintendent, Bret took over the reins as the superintendent of Klein ISD in 2016.

Earlier in his career, Bret was a member of the second corps of Teach for America, teaching in Houston ISD and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He received his Doctorate in Education from the University of Texas, a Master’s in Education from Texas State University, and a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of Houston. He is a forever learner, a voracious reader, and loves to run and cook. He believes the best decisions are made collaboratively, and works to ensure student success and equity are always the lenses through which those decisions are evaluated.

Bret’s wife Marcee shares his enthusiasm for hiking, reading, and theatre. Marcee is the director of community engagement for the non-profit Bridging for Tomorrow, and just completed her second master's degree, this one in nonprofit management. Their two sons, Alan and Nico, are proud public school graduates. Alan is a computer programmer, and Nico is working on his master's degree in education.
