• About Mr. Alonzo

I grew up in the Rogue Valley and graduated from the Medford School District. After High School I received my Associates of Arts Degree from Linn-Benton Community College. I then transferred to Southern Oregon University where I received my Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Promotion and Fitness Management. After getting my Bachelor's Degree, I went into the Master of Arts in Teaching program at Southern Oregon University, and graduated the following year. I started substitute teaching in the Medford School District in 2006 with most of the time spent at the secondary level. The last 5 years I have been the PE specialist for Kennedy Elementary, and I have enjoyed it immensely. I enjoy helping the students learn, and teaching them fitness related skills that they can continue to use throughout their lives.

During the summer I spend a week working at Southern Oregon University's ACADEMY camp as the Recreation Director. ACADEMY is a camp for highly motivated 5th-8th grade students who love to learn. It is an enrichment program for students who can benefit from opportunities beyond the normal school curriculum. During the camp, students will stay in the dorms at SOU and explore a broad range of courses, workshops, cultural experiences and recreational activities. I have worked at the camp for the past 8 summers.
Outside of teaching, I also coach. I have been a wrestling coach at South Medford High School for 18 years, and a football coach at South Medford for 16 years.
On my spare time I love to explore and stay active. I participate in city league softball with several friends from high school and other friends I've met along the way. I am also a huge fan of the outdoors and love to get out and camp, fish, hunt, kayak and especially hike. In a typical year, I will hike more than 500 miles and see some of the most beautiful country that America has to offer. I have climbed the 3 highest peaks in the continental US, and hiked in 10 different states and I look forward to adding to that number in the future.
