Emerging Multilingual/English Learner Program

At the Medford School District the multilingual learners program supports emergent multilingual students as they develop English language proficiency, celebrating and affirming the rich experiences and skills that culturally and linguistically diverse students bring to our schools and communities.

Our teachers meet the academic, linguistic, and social needs of a diverse student population through sheltered instruction approaches. For English Language Development (ELD) instruction, the district provides specialized ELD services based on grade level. At the elementary level, students are pulled out of the general education classroom for targeted ELD instruction. At the middle and high school levels, students receive ELD instruction through a dedicated class period as part of their regular school schedule. Classroom teachers collaboratively plan, teach, and assess to ensure emergent multilingual student success. Teachers share designated time to co-design lessons with clear roles, expectations, and supports.
