Message from Superintendent Champion
August 12, 2020
Greetings, Medford School District Families,
We received new guidance from the Oregon Department of Education yesterday, and as promised, here is an update as it applies to the MSD. The full guidance is here and while we are still studying it, here are some of the take-aways:
- While we are in MSD Connects at Home (Comprehensive Distance Learning) there is an option for some limited in-person learning opportunities. We can only serve groups of ten at a time for up to two hours (and with only 250 students a week). It’s a complicated and very new piece of information, so we appreciate your patience and grace as we work through it. More details to come.
- We have some flexibility in providing childcare. We are currently working with our community partners on childcare options and will keep you posted. In the meantime,if you are in need of childcare, a great resource is to call 211. They will help connect you with available childcare in the area.
- One important state update centers on the exceptions from the metrics for rural, remote districts and schools. Unfortunately, neither our district nor any of our schools qualify. (The closest is Ruch Outdoor Community School, but they are shy of meeting a portion of the requirements.)
Even with this added uncertainty, we do know a couple of things… We are still starting the school year with MSD Connects at Home (Comprehensive Distance Learning). We still are leaning on our core values of grace, simplicity, equity, and transparency for all of our work. And we are still very grateful for the honor of serving your students.
