We employ several leadership positions at the Medford School District. Job titles include but are not limited to the following:

• Superintendent
• Principal
• Assistant Principal

• Manager of Network and Infrastructure
• Director of Literacy, Curriculum and Instruction

Different jobs may require different skills. Superintendents are responsible for overseeing the entire school district as well as responding to the demands of other parties within the district — people like parents, advocates and the community at large. Principals manage all school operations such as overseeing daily school activities, evaluating teachers’ performance, managing budgets, and providing a safe and productive learning environment for students, and more. While the principal typically handles issues related to the school and its personnel, assistant principals usually help with student discipline, scheduling and other day-to-day issues. Managers oversee departments and are an integral part of assisting the district operations.

Public school administrators usually work first as teachers since classroom experience is invaluable. Administrators at the Medford School District will need to earn an administrator license as outlined by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC).  

If you are already teaching, you have learned what it means to work in a school setting. For many public school teachers who make the switch to being school administrators, the career journey follows a certain path:

1.    Earn a bachelor’s degree
2.    Complete a teacher preparation program
3.    Earn a state teaching license or certificate
4.    Teach in the classroom for several years
5.    Complete administrator licensure or certification
6.    Apply for school leadership roles

The field of education, like most industries, provides a wide variety of job opportunities. There are many managerial roles in education that support school districts, in operations and technical areas. Understanding more about careers in education management can help you decide if it is the right path for you. Whether it be working your way up from Custodian to Head Custodian then Site Supervisor or gaining experience in technical roles in IT with support for specialized credentials, there are pathways for growth in many positions within the Medford School District.

Current staff interested in school-based and/or district-office leadership positions are encouraged to apply/attend the Leadership Academy. By investing in leadership development, we witness positive outcomes that significantly impact individuals and the organization.

Topics include Communicating like a Leader, School Budgeting, Leading Culture and Climate, Instructional Leadership, and the Language of Leadership and Change Management. You’ll be able to join other staff aspiring to strengthen their leadership skills for informal mentoring, networking, and learning. Courses will be instructed by district leaders from a variety of departments.
