What Can Visitors Expect When Visiting An MSD Campus?

We have a robust, multilayered security network of adults, systems, structures, protocols, and other supports in place to keep students, staff, and schools safe.

Fences, Doors and Secondary Barricades

All schools have perimeter fencing to help define the boundaries of campus as well as interior fencing to provide an inner ring of security.  We know that one of the most effective low cost - no cost security measures is to lock doors.  As such, all externally facing doors are locked on campuses with internal doors either locked as well or having the ability to be locked quickly with the use of Lockbloks.  All spaces are equipped with the ability to enhance barricades as needed.  Students and staff are trained on a variety of techniques throughout the year.

Security Vestibules and Check-In Procedures

Many MSD  schools are equipped with a security vestibule at the main entrance of the building.  We are adding additional vestibules each year as part of the district's capital improvement plan.  We will continue to do so until all sites have a security vestibule.  These secure spaces offer an added layer of protection for schools and ensure that no unauthorized visitors bypass the office area.

When you arrive at the front entrance, push the button on the box and state the purpose of your visit.

Staff will open the door electronically and allow entry into the security vestibule where you can speak with school staff.

Please note that a photo id is required to move past the secure vestibule at all schools.

Inside the vestibule you will be required to scan your identification into the visitor management system (VMS).  The VMS allows schools to screen and account for all visitors in the building.  This system cross references the identification with the nationwide sex offender database and prints detailed badges so all visitors and volunteers can be easily identified on school grounds.

Campus Safety and Security Monitors

In addition to School Resource Officer (SROS), Marshals and Community Service Officers (CSOs), MSD employs multiple campus monitors throughout the district. These staff members provide a vital role in creating a safe learning environment for students and staff.  Campus Monitors supervise students during school hours and at after school events.

Cameras

Cameras are in place throughout the interior and exterior of all schools.  All school buses are equipped with cameras as well.   The camera system serves as a valuable tool for school leadership and campus security teams to investigate incidents and identify areas of concern within their campuses.  Cameras are utilized to provide accurate accounts of events and expedite the investigative process for school staff.  Select staff monitor cameras at all sites and utilize them during incident response.
