MSD and MEA Reach Tentative Agreement

The Medford School District Board of Education and Medford Education Association (MEA) are pleased to announce that on May 9, 2017, bargaining teams reached a tentative agreement that prioritizes student achievement, supports the recruitment and retention of high quality teachers, and allows the district to maintain a sustainable budget.
“We are excited that we were able to sit at a table and do what’s best for our community, our staff, and our kids,” said school board member Jeff Thomas. “Working with the MEA leadership has been a great experience. We all worked hard to ensure success for kids and fair compensation for staff.”
“The process was highly collaborative and we came to an agreement that kept our students and staff moving in a productive direction within the constraints that exist,” said MEA President Dan Jones. “We appreciate the experience the Board and District leadership team brought to the table and the willingness to consider all points of view in the decision making process.”
The agreement is a two-year contract that includes a two-percent raise (cost of living increase) and maintains step increases for longevity. A $500 member stipend would be provided to all members if the contract is ratified by June 30, 2017.
Members would continue to pay 10-percent of their medical benefits with premiums and deductibles aligned with the Oregon Educators Benefit Board (OEBB).
“The school board and the MEA understand how important health insurance is for staff,” Thomas said. “We will continue to work together to keep escalating costs managed, so the district can continue to offer affordable insurance for its members.”
Language changes to the contract would add additional instructional time for students allowing them to reach higher standards, while allowing for more planning time for teachers. Changes would also allow the district to better support students with special needs and increase the use of inclusive practices.
“This is mutually agreed upon language that will improve the quality of teaching and learning in the Medford School District,” said Thomas.
“In the end, the Association and the District were able to come to a compromise regarding issues that make the best use of time and resources while remaining fiscally responsible,” said Jones.
“Settling on a two-year contract now allows us to make smart and strategic decisions and continue our focus on the business of educating students,” said Superintendent Brian Shumate. “I am pleased that both parties came to the table and worked collaboratively to do what’s best for students and teachers.”

Bargaining teams from the Medford School District (MSD) and Medford Education Association (MEA) met on April 20, 2017 to exchange counter proposals.
all articles with changes proposed by both parties were discussed. Both parties are working hard to reach tentative agreements by the end of June when the current contract expires.

The negotiation teams for the Medford School District and Medford Education Association met Tuesday, April 12, 2017 in order to continue negotiating a new licensed contract. The meeting took place from 5:00 PM – 9:20 PM in Room 267 at the Medford School District Office. The negotiation teams discussed Article XII Working Conditions During School Days and Article XIII Insurance Benefits. The meeting was primarily informational and no agreements were reached.
The teams will meet again this Thursday, April 13 at 5:30 in the Medford School District Board Room.

On March 22, 2017, the Medford School District Board of Education and the Medford Education Association exchanged initial contract proposals and began collaborative discussions for the licensed collective bargaining agreement that expires on June 30, 2017.
At the first negotiations session, the MSD and the MEA presented their initial proposals. The MSD’s proposal supports the district’s goals to improve student achievement; recruit, hire and retain high quality teachers; and maintain a sustainable budget.
Meetings will continue with dates posted on the district website.
