This week, South Medford High School’s (SMHS) Robyn Schiffer was selected as Oregon Coach of the Year for Girls Swimming by the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS).

The Oregon Athletic Coaches Association (OACA)  announced the award Monday. Each year, the OACA selects one coach from each of the 10 boys and 10 girls sports offered in Oregon. Each state award winner then becomes eligible for Section 8 awards, competing against coaches in their respective sports from Washington, Montana, Idaho, Alaska, and Wyoming. Section 8 winners then compete for National Coach of the Year.

Coach Schiffer is in her 11th year at South Medford and coaches three sports. She taught for seven years before moving into the role of a counselor for the last four years. She has coached individual conference champions as well as medalists at the Oregon State Championships.  While coaching in California, Coach Schiffer won two conference championships, in addition to coaching swimmers going on to the Olympic Trials, Olympics, and Para-Olympics. Last year, the Panthers boy’s team finished 3rd and the girls 2nd at the SWC championships.

“Coach Schiffer is a valuable asset on our campus at South Medford,” said James Joy, SMHS Athletic Director. “As a counselor and three-sport coach, she is able to connect with hundreds of students on campus in many different ways. This is evident in the fact that participation numbers in cross country, swimming, and track & field are high. Last year, 305 South Medford students participated on teams with Coach Schiffer. She holds athletes to a high standard in the pool and in the classroom.”

The following criteria were used in the selection process: “Nominees must exemplify the highest standards of sportsmanship, ethical conduct, and moral character and carry the endorsement of the respective state high school association. We want them to be not only successful in their respective sports but also as individuals in their schools and communities. Longevity in coaching is also an important consideration.”

Coach Schiffer holds the following coaching titles:
